Moscow Mule Variations

There are endless variations and twists you can do to the Moscow mule. Your imagination is the limit. We will list a few of the most popular ones below and a few of our own creations.

Kentucky Mule:

For a Kentucky mule you will just switch out the vodka for bourbon/whiskey. We preferer using one that is on the less sweet side like Pendleton because the ginger beer is already really sweet.

We are far from whiskey experts and just use what tastes good to us. You will have to experiment to see what your favorite is.

Gin Gin Mule or London Mule

This is a Moscow mule made with gin in the place of vodka. Try this Peach Gin Mule.

Mexican Mule

Switch out the vodka for tequila to make a Mexican mule.

Dark and Stormy, would this be a Caribbean mule?? Maybe

Use dark rum in place of vodka.

Raspberry Lemon Mule

This is one of our creations. We add a small handful of raspberries and trade the lime for lemon then garnish with mint.

Montana Mule or Huckleberry Mule

Use huckleberry flavored vodka, we recommend Wild Roots or 44° North

Berry Mule

One of our favorite things to do to a mule is to add a small handful of fresh or frozen berries. Blackberries, blueberries or raspberries.

Hibiscus Mule

Use Q hibiscus ginger beer.

FAQ

What is a Moscow Mule

A Moscow mule is a cocktail made with just three simple ingredients: Vodka, Ginger beer and Lime juice. It is traditionally served in a copper mug (said to keep the drink cold). But you can serve it in pretty much whatever you want. Some people prefer the copper mug because they say it makes it taste different but honestly we can’t really tell a difference, even after sipping out of different cups side by side. But if that is what you like then absolutely go for it! It really does look cool!

What is The Best Ginger Beer for Moscow Mules

Cock n Bull is our favorite and Fever Tree is runner up.

We actually did a blind taste test with a few people and everyone’s favorite was Cock n Bull.

Fun fact: It is said that the Moscow mule was invented in a bar called Cock n Bull. We didn’t know that at the time of our blind taste test.

These are the brands we blind tested (listed favorite to least favorite). They were just the ones we could find at our local grocery stores.

  1. Cock n Bull (great)
  2. Fever Tree (great)
  3. Q Ginger Beer (great)
  4. Bedford’s (good)
  5. Reed’s (ok)
  6. Signature Select (too sweet, not enough ginger flavor)
